The Washington Post

Cocktails

This special section provides tools and expertise to make craft cocktails at home, with a mix of recipes and tips. For this project, I shaped the overall visual aesthetic for a series published from summer to fall. I worked with designers and photo stylists to source materials and art direct photoshoots.

Can’t decide on a cocktail? Give our drink generator a shake.
I pitched, conceptualized and designed an interactive story tool that engages readers to discover a new cocktail by physically shaking their phone, a first for The Washington Post. Give the generator a shake.

Odds Against

This special section examines the impact of legalized gambling in sports, through news coverage, accountability journalism and advice for navigating this new landscape. I helped launch this section by serving as the lead designer, art director, photo editor and project manager. I established basic templates to use for recurring columns, produced weekly original photo illustrations and hired freelancer photojournalists to bring this new line of coverage to life.

Dogs & psychology

This special section dives into the field of canine cognition to learn more about how dogs think and interact with the world.

Art direction:
I served as the lead designer responsible for the print cover art direction and photo shoot, color palette, illustrator curation, and project managing print and digital.

Print: This was a 12-page special section published on August 19, 2021, ahead of of National Dog Day on August 26.
See the full section here.

Digital & mobile: Worked on 7 stories for the section, including a photo essay, art directed illustrations and original photo illustrations.

La Navidad

In this ultimate personal project, I wrote, art directed, designed, and conceptualized across platforms for Celebrating Navidad, a roadmap of my family’s traditional Christmas with recipes from my upbringing. From this one story idea, I adapted the story to reach audience in various ways, from creating a comic for Instagram, designing the Lily Lines newsletter and creating a Spotify playlist. In this project, I worked on new ways to tell a single story with words, sound, taste and illustrations that evoked nostalgia. Read the story

Supply chain crisis

Supply chain woes across the world brought consumers to their knees with delays, cost increase and a lot of frustration. I worked on two distinct pieces that detailed a troubled international system.

Broken supply chain: The first part breaks down the journey of imported goods from the Port of Los Angeles, to truck drivers and rail yards, and into retail spaces. All access video and photography complimented by graphics gives a full view of the difficulties that arose in 2021. Read the story

The cost of delay: In this second part, we follow five popular holiday items from their source of creation to zoom in on their exact pain point. This examination revealed the details of higher retail costs and longer manufacturing and shipping time. Read the story

Oscars ballot

The Oscars aired late in 2021, but viewers could still predict winners ahead of 93rd annual Academy Awards. I was responsible for illustration/animation art direction and digital design concept. Readers can vote by clicking on a nominee, and compare their answers with other voters and movie critic Ann Hornaday’s pick. Each commissioned spot illustration represents a nominee in the bet picture category. Read the story
